Period Rooms and Cultural Transfer (Bochum, 22-23 May 19)
Ruhr-Universität Bochum, May 22 – 23, 2019
Period Rooms as Hubs of Cultural Transfer (Workshop)
The two-day workshop addresses the translocation of cultural assets, local and international museum networks as well as the current tasks and challenges museums are confronted with in dealing with the period room. The emergence and establishment of the period room in European and US-American museums is discussed as an international phenomenon that is largely based on the exchange of ideas and the transfer of objects. Beyond questions of provenance the period room display will be examined on the basis of the following questions: which conception of cultural identity accompanies the installation of period rooms? Which constructions of the “self” and the “foreign” are mediated through it, and which consequences result for current curatorial practices? The workshop is part of the research project “Period rooms. Between exhibition space and living room negotiating past and present” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and it is organized by Änne Söll (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) and Andrea Meyer (TU Berlin).
