International Symposium “All the Beauty of the World” (Berlin 2016)
Both the transfer and dissemination of art objects are initiated and enabled by actors and their networks. The transactions conducted by these actors are influenced by social and political circumstances and by the technological abilities of the time. The first section of the symposium “All the Beauty of the World. The non-Western Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)” explores the significance of networks for the trading and purchasing activities of private and public collectors and dealers of non-European art in 18th and 19th century. In their papers, Noémie Etienne (Bern) and Natasha Eaton (London) question the role of individual actors in the acquisition and transport of objects to the West. Talip Törün (Bremerhaven) discusses the role of Western trading companies and their strategies in the establishment of the emerging Western market for non-European art. The section is chaired by Johannes Nathan (Berlin / Potsdam / Zürich).
